Why I Moved My Entire Life to Obsidian (Local-First PKM)

We trust the cloud with our most intimate thoughts, our business plans, and our personal health data. But should we?
After years of using web-based tools, I moved my entire Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) system to Obsidian. Here is why the "Local-First" movement is gaining massive traction.
Your Brain in Markdown
Obsidian is fundamentally just a folder of text files on your computer. They are formatted in Markdown.
The Power of the Graph
Obsidian's killer feature isn't the text editor; it's the links.
By using double brackets (`[[` `]]`), you effortlessly link thoughts together. Over time, a visual graph emerges, showing the connections between your ideas. You stop organizing by rigid folders and start organizing by relation.
The Setup
If you want to try moving your life to Obsidian, don't overcomplicate it.
What is local-first knowledge management?
Local-first knowledge management means your notes live as plain files on your own device first, and sync to the cloud second — instead of living on a server you don't control. The payoff is ownership: the data is readable without any specific app, works offline instantly, and stays private by default. The trade-off is that you manage your own sync and backups.
Local-first vs. cloud-only notes
| Cloud-only app | Local-first (Obsidian) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who holds your data | The vendor | You |
| Works fully offline | Sometimes | Always |
| Readable in 50 years | Depends on vendor | Plain markdown |
| Private by default | No | Yes |
| Sync and backup | Automatic | You set it up |
This matters more every year. There were 72.9 million independent workers in the U.S. in 2024 (MBO Partners) — people whose business knowledge is their core asset. Owning the systems that hold that knowledge isn't paranoia; it's basic risk management.
Own your systems, not just your output. The tools will change; the person who controls their own data and workflows is the one who compounds.
Own your data. It's the most valuable asset you have.
